Terms of Use

1. Acceptance of These Terms

Welcome to Canonical Timeline ("Canonical Timeline," "we," "our," or "us"). These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Canonical Timeline website, applications, and related services (collectively, the "Service").

By creating an account, purchasing a subscription, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the Service.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least eighteen (18) years old to use the Service.

By creating an account, you represent that you meet this requirement and have the legal capacity to enter into this agreement.

3. Description of the Service

Canonical Timeline provides software that allows users to organize, analyze, document, and discuss information for investigative and research purposes.

The Service is a platform for user-generated research.

Canonical Timeline does not verify, endorse, or guarantee the accuracy, completeness, legality, reliability, or conclusions of user-generated content.

Nothing on the Service constitutes legal advice, professional advice, or factual certification.

4. User Accounts

To use certain features of the Service, you must create an account.

You agree to:

  • Provide accurate account information.
  • Keep your email address current.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of your password.
  • Notify us promptly if you believe your account has been compromised.
  • Accept responsibility for activities occurring under your account.

You may not transfer or sell your account without our written permission.

5. Subscriptions and Billing

Some features of the Service require a paid subscription.

Subscription fees are charged through Stripe.

Unless otherwise stated, subscriptions automatically renew until canceled.

You may cancel your subscription at any time. Cancellation prevents future renewals but does not automatically entitle you to a refund for the current billing period.

Unless required by applicable law, subscription fees are non-refundable.

We reserve the right to modify subscription pricing with reasonable notice before future renewals.

6. User Content

The Service allows users to upload and publish content including, but not limited to:

  • Notes
  • Comments
  • Images
  • Files
  • URLs
  • Research materials
  • Investigative evidence

You retain ownership of your User Content.

By submitting User Content, you grant Canonical Timeline LLC a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, process, display, distribute, and otherwise use that content solely for the purpose of operating, maintaining, improving, securing, and providing the Service.

This license ends when your content is permanently removed from our active systems, except where retention is necessary for backups, legal compliance, dispute resolution, or enforcement of these Terms.

7. Your Responsibilities

You are solely responsible for:

  • The content you submit.
  • The legality of your submissions.
  • Ensuring you have the necessary rights to upload content.
  • The accuracy of your investigations.
  • Compliance with applicable laws.

Submitting content to Canonical Timeline does not transfer responsibility to Canonical Timeline.

8. Copyright

You represent that any content you upload:

  • Is owned by you;
  • Is licensed to you;
  • Is otherwise authorized by law; or
  • Is permitted under applicable exceptions such as fair use.

You are solely responsible for determining whether your use of copyrighted material is lawful.

Canonical Timeline does not provide legal advice regarding copyright or fair use.

9. Intellectual Property

The Service, including its software, source code, user interface, branding, graphics, logos, documentation, and original content created by Canonical Timeline LLC, is protected by intellectual property laws.

Except where expressly permitted, you may not copy, modify, distribute, reverse engineer, or commercially exploit any portion of the Service.

The name "Canonical Timeline" and associated branding are the property of Canonical Timeline LLC.

Nothing in these Terms transfers ownership of our intellectual property to you.

10. Public Content

If you choose to make content publicly available through the Service, you understand that it may be viewed, referenced, and shared by other users.

Canonical Timeline does not guarantee that publicly shared content will remain private.

11. Acceptable Use

You agree not to use the Service to:

  • Violate any law.
  • Harass, threaten, or abuse others.
  • Publish defamatory material.
  • Upload malware or malicious software.
  • Attempt unauthorized access to accounts or systems.
  • Interfere with the operation of the Service.
  • Send spam.
  • Impersonate another individual or organization.
  • Infringe the intellectual property rights of others.
  • Circumvent security measures.
  • Use automated tools to disrupt or overload the Service.

12. Suspension and Termination

We may suspend, restrict, or terminate your account at our discretion, including when necessary to:

  • Protect the security or integrity of the Service.
  • Investigate suspected abuse.
  • Comply with legal obligations.
  • Enforce these Terms.
  • Prevent harm to other users.

Termination does not relieve you of obligations incurred before termination.

13. Availability

We strive to provide a reliable Service but do not guarantee uninterrupted availability.

Maintenance, upgrades, technical failures, security incidents, or events beyond our control may temporarily affect access.

We reserve the right to modify or discontinue features at any time.

14. Third-Party Services

The Service integrates with third-party providers including payment processors, hosting providers, mapping services, and communication platforms.

Canonical Timeline is not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or practices of third-party services.

Your use of those services may also be governed by their own terms.

15. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE."

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, CANONICAL TIMELINE DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND ACCURACY.

WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE ERROR-FREE, SECURE, OR CONTINUOUSLY AVAILABLE.

16. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, CANONICAL TIMELINE LLC, ITS OWNERS, EMPLOYEES, CONTRACTORS, AND AFFILIATES SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.

OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO USE THE SERVICE DURING THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations of liability. In those jurisdictions, these limitations apply only to the extent permitted by law.

17. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Canonical Timeline LLC and its owners, employees, contractors, and affiliates from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from:

  • Your use of the Service;
  • Your User Content;
  • Your violation of these Terms; or
  • Your violation of another person's rights.

18. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, without regard to its conflict of law principles.

19. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time.

If we make material changes, we will update the Effective Date at the beginning of this document.

Your continued use of the Service after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

20. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is determined to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.

21. Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and any additional policies referenced by these Terms, constitute the entire agreement between you and Canonical Timeline regarding the Service.
