Copyright & DMCA Policy

Effective Date: July 6, 2026

1. Introduction

Canonical Timeline respects the intellectual property rights of others and expects users of the Service to do the same.

This Copyright & DMCA Policy explains how Canonical Timeline LLC responds to claims of copyright infringement, how copyright owners may submit notices, and how users may respond if they believe content was removed in error.

Canonical Timeline is a platform that enables users to organize, analyze, and discuss information.

Users may upload research materials, notes, quotations, images, URLs, and other supporting evidence as part of their investigations.

Users are solely responsible for ensuring they have the legal right to upload or use any material they submit.

Nothing in this Policy or elsewhere on the Service constitutes legal advice regarding copyright law or fair use.

3. Respect for Intellectual Property

You may submit content only if:

  • You created it;
  • You have permission from the copyright owner;
  • Your use is authorized by law, including applicable fair use or similar legal doctrines; or
  • You otherwise possess the legal right to use the material.

Submitting content to Canonical Timeline does not transfer responsibility for copyright compliance to Canonical Timeline.

4. Fair Use

Certain uses of copyrighted material may be permitted under applicable law, including the doctrine of fair use in the United States.

Whether a particular use qualifies as fair use depends on the specific facts and applicable law.

Canonical Timeline does not determine whether a user's submission is fair use before publication, and users remain solely responsible for their own legal compliance.

If you believe content hosted on Canonical Timeline infringes your copyright, you may submit a written notice containing:

  • Your full name.
  • Your contact information.
  • A description of the copyrighted work.
  • The location (URL) of the allegedly infringing material.
  • A statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is unauthorized.
  • A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner.
  • Your physical or electronic signature.

Copyright notices may be sent to:

6. Our Response

Upon receiving a substantially complete copyright notice, Canonical Timeline may:

  • Review the reported material.
  • Remove or disable access to the material.
  • Notify the affected user.
  • Request additional information if necessary.
  • Take other actions we believe appropriate under applicable law.

Submitting a notice does not guarantee that material will be removed.

7. Counter-Notification

If your content has been removed because of a copyright complaint and you believe the removal was made in error or that your use is lawful, you may submit a written counter-notification.

A counter-notification should include:

  • Your name and contact information.
  • Identification of the removed material.
  • A statement made under penalty of perjury that you believe the material was removed because of mistake or misidentification.
  • A statement consenting to the jurisdiction of the appropriate federal court, where required under applicable law.
  • Your physical or electronic signature.

If appropriate, Canonical Timeline may restore the material in accordance with applicable law.

8. Repeat Infringers

Canonical Timeline reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts of users who repeatedly infringe the intellectual property rights of others.

What constitutes a "repeat infringer" will be determined based on the circumstances of each case.

9. Misrepresentations

Knowingly submitting false copyright notices or false counter-notifications may result in legal liability under applicable law.

Users should submit copyright claims only when they have a good-faith belief that infringement has occurred.

10. Preservation of Evidence

Canonical Timeline may retain copies of removed content, account information, logs, or related records where reasonably necessary to:

  • Comply with legal obligations.
  • Investigate abuse.
  • Resolve disputes.
  • Defend legal claims.
  • Enforce our Terms of Use.

Retention of such records does not imply endorsement of the removed content.

11. Public Research

Because Canonical Timeline is designed to facilitate research, users should avoid uploading more copyrighted material than is reasonably necessary to support their analysis.

Whenever practical, users are encouraged to:

  • Link to original sources instead of reproducing entire works.
  • Quote only the portions reasonably necessary for discussion.
  • Provide attribution where appropriate.
  • Respect the rights of creators and publishers.

These recommendations are intended to encourage responsible research practices and do not constitute legal advice.

12. Policy Updates

Canonical Timeline may update this Policy from time to time.

Material changes will be reflected by updating the Effective Date at the beginning of this document.
